Strategic inventory planning is the secret sauce for crushing seasonal sales events on Amazon.
Here's the 3-step process we used to help a client generate $1.2M during Fall Prime Day:
1️⃣ Analyze historical data
Use past sales data and forecasting tools to predict demand spikes. This gives you a clear picture of what to expect.
Let's break this down with a real example:
For our client, we looked at their sales data from the previous year's Fall Prime Day.
We noticed that certain product categories, like electronics and home goods, saw a 300% increase in sales compared to regular days.
We also used Amazon's built-in forecasting tools to predict upcoming trends. These tools showed that eco-friendly products were likely to be in high demand this year.
By combining historical data with future predictions, we created a detailed forecast for each product category.
This allowed us to make informed decisions about which products to stock up on and which ones to scale back.
2️⃣ Adjust inventory levels
Based on predictions, fine-tune your stock. Ensure high in-stock rates without overstocking.
This balance is crucial.
Here's how we put this into action:
For products we predicted would be hot sellers, like our client's eco-friendly water bottles, we increased inventory by 250%. This ensured we wouldn't run out during peak sales periods.
For slower-moving items, we kept inventory levels steady or even reduced them slightly. This freed up warehouse space and capital for more popular products.
We also set up automatic reorder points in Amazon's inventory management system. This meant that as soon as stock levels hit a certain threshold, new orders were automatically placed with suppliers.
The key here was finding the sweet spot: enough inventory to meet demand without tying up too much capital in unsold goods.
3️⃣ Monitor and optimize IPI
Keep a close eye on your Inventory Performance Index. It's key for maintaining favorable storage and fulfillment conditions in Amazon warehouses.
Here's what we did to boost our client's IPI:
We set up daily alerts to monitor the IPI score, which factors in excess inventory, sell-through rate, and stranded inventory.
To improve the score, we:
- Ran flash sales on slow-moving items to reduce excess inventory
- Created bundles for complementary products to increase sell-through rates
- Regularly checked for and fixed stranded inventory issues
By consistently optimizing these factors, we raised our client's IPI score from 350 to 750 over two months. This higher score meant lower storage fees and better placement in Amazon's fulfillment centers, leading to faster delivery times for customers.
This strategy isn't just about boosting sales. It's about smart inventory management.
The results?
✅ Higher in-stock rates during peak events
✅ Lower aged inventory fees
✅ Improved IPI scores
✅ Streamlined inventory management
Don't let poor inventory planning cost you sales this holiday season.
Implement this strategy now and watch your Amazon business soar.
